The IDF Diabetes Atlas (2021) reports that 10.5% of the adult population (20-79 years) has diabetes, with almost half unaware that they are living with the condition.

By 2045, IDF projections show that 1 in 8 adults, approximately 783 million, will be living with diabetes, an increase of 46%.

Over 90% of people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes, which is driven by socio-economic, demographic, environmental, and genetic factors.

The key contributors to the rise in type 2 diabetes include:

  • Urbanisation

  • An ageing population

  • Decreasing levels of physical activity

  • Increasing overweight and obesity prevalence

However, it is possible to reduce the impact of diabetes by taking preventive measures for type 2 diabetes and providing early diagnosis and proper care for all types of diabetes. These measures can help people living with the condition avoid or delay complications.

  • Nearly half of adults have hypertension (119.9 million).

  • About 1 in 4 adults with hypertension have their hypertension under control (27.0 million).

  • All adults with hypertension are recommended by a clinician to undergo lifestyle modifications. This is the only treatment recommendation for 1 in 5 adults (25.0 million).

  • Most adults with hypertension (4 in 5) are also recommended by a clinician to take prescription medication(s) (94.9 million).

  • Many adults who are already treated with antihypertensive medication(s) may need to have their current medication dosage increased or to be prescribed additional medications to achieve blood pressure control (33.2 million). More than half of this group have blood pressure ≥140/90 mm Hg (18.8 million).

  • Many adults for whom hypertension medication is recommended by a clinician are untreated (34.8 million). Two-thirds of this group have blood pressure of ≥140/90 mm Hg (23.4 million).

  • Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men, women, and people of most racial and ethnic groups.

  • One person dies every 33 seconds from cardiovascular disease.

  • In 2022, 702,880 people died from heart disease. That's the equivalent of 1 in every 5 deaths.

  • Heart disease cost about $252.2 billion from 2019 to 2020.

  • This includes the cost of health care services, medicines, and lost productivity due to death.

  • Heart disease is responsible for most deaths worldwide for both men and women of all races.

  • As of 2018, 30.3 million U.S. adultsTrusted Source were diagnosed with heart disease. Every year, about 647,000 AmericansTrusted Source die from heart disease, making it the leading cause of death in the United States. Heart disease causes 1 out of every 4 deaths

"we love when you can do what you love to do!"

what is internal medicine?

Internists must complete a three-year residency before they begin practicing internal medicine, and some take additional training in a subspecialty, such as neurology,  endocrinology, oncology,  psychiatry, dermatology, cardiology, geriatrics or rheumatology.

Internal medicine doctors specialize in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease in their adult patients. They are trained to offer care for a wide variety of health conditions and to counsel their patients on prevention and overall wellness.
